The Crusaders outscored Benedictine, 15-10 in overtime, to escape Atchison, Kansas with a win.
Jackson Capel lit up the nets with a 34-point effort, hitting 10 of 19 from the field ( 3 of 7 3s) and 11 of 13 free throws. Capel also tallied four rebounds, four assists and three steals. Todd Simon recorded the tenth double-double of his career, scoring 17 points and grabbing 10 boards. Shane Nicholson added 12 points and a half dozen assists. Tim Dial came off the bench to score 10 points and pull down seven rebounds.
Dan VanDyke scored 24 points and pulled down 15 rebounds to lead Benedictine. Also scoring in double figures for BC were Jack Johnson (20), Vince Brennan (12), Dave Goettelmann (11) and Ronnie Tyson (10).
Both teams had a good night finding the bucket. BC hit 47.6 percent of its field goals to 45.8 percent for EU. EU made 8 of 17 3-pointers (.471) and BC made 10 of 25 (.400). At the line, BC had an 85.2 percentage (23-27) and EU made 80.0 percent (24-30). Both teams had 39 rebounds. Benedictine turned the ball over seven more times, 10-7, and EU scored 21 points off the miscues.
Adam Hepker scored 30 points for the second time a row, earning NAIA II national player of the week honors, and leading MNU to a 89-82 overtime win at Culver-Stockton. Hepker also had seven assists, five rebounds and two steals. Danny Hawkins added 26 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and three steals. Brenton Bell scored 16 points.
EU and MNU met on Jan. 28 in Springfield and Evangel (No. 3) defeated MidAmerica Nazarene (No. 4), 79-65.
MidAmerica Nazarene leads the series 27-25 and has won 7 of the last 11 meetings. EU won this season’s first game, 79-65, in Springfield on Jan. 28 - just 10 days ago. MNU has won the last four games played in Olathe and leads the series at home, 17-8.
Evangel’s Shane Nicholson has now scored 986 points - just 14 shy of 1,000. When he makes his 1000th point, he will become the fourth player on the 2007-08 team to score over 1,000 points.
EU’s Jackson Capel now has 101 steals and is the 27th Crusader to tally 100 steals. Teammate Shane Nicholson has 109 and is No. 18 on the career list.
