The Evangel baseball team’s doubleheader at home against Park University on Friday, Feb. 15, has been cancelled. Weather permitting, Evangel and Park are scheduled to play two games on Saturday, Feb. 16, beginning at noon on the Evangel field. Evangel will stay at home for another doubleheader on Tuesday, Feb. 19, against College of the Ozarks. The first game will begin at noon on the Evangel field.
Due to the inclement weather in Springfield, Evangel (1-1) was forced to open its season at Ottawa (Kans.) University on Feb. 13. The doubleheader was originally scheduled to be played at Evangel. Instead, the teams will trade sites. Ottawa (2-2) will now come to Springfield on April 2 for a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
Evangel began its 2008 season with a 7-4 win in the first game against Ottawa. Senior Scott Ditzfeld went the distance on the mound for the win. Sophomore Brandon Scott, junior Phil Reed and sophomore Andrew Teaster each had two hits for the Crusaders. Andrew Rickman, a sophomore, had one hit, a three-run home run. In the second game, Ottawa scored three runs in the fifth inning to overtake Evangel and win 6-4. Freshman Andy Pfeifer took the loss after relieving starter Craig Penley, a sophomore, at the beginning of the fourth inning. Evangel managed only three hits, but all were for extra bases. Senior Tyler Henry blasted a home run, Reed and Teaster each had a double.
