For the second time this year, Evangel junior Jackson Capel has been honored as the player of the week by the Heart of America Athletic Conference.

The 6-foot-3 Evangel guard averaged 27.0 points and 9.0 rebounds on his way to another record-setting week. He made seven 3-pointers versus Missouri Valley on Feb. 16 to set a new Evangel season record for 3-pointers made with 105. He now has made 112 treys. The previous record of 99 was held by Maury Leitzke (1996-97). Capel also dished out three assists in EU’s two wins last week, blocked two shots and had one steal. He connected on 8 of 19 3-pointers for a 42.1 percentage and made 16 of 20 free throws for an 80.0 percentage. During the week of Feb. 10-16, Evangel won 79-65 at Lindenwood and survived a hard-fought, double overtime game at home with Missouri Valley, 105-104.

Currently, Capel is ranked No. 3 in NAIA II in 3-point field goals made per game (4.0), No. 8 in points per game (22.0), and No. 9 in 3-point percentage (.489, 112-229. The Erlanger, Kentucky, product was also honored as the conference player of the week on Jan. 16. A day later, he was picked as the NAIA II national player of the week.

Evangel is ranked No. 3 on the Feb. 20 NAIA II national poll. The Crusaders (23-5, 16-2 HAAC) will travel to William Jewell (17-11, 13-5 HAAC) on Thursday, Feb. 21. Game time is 7:30 p.m. in Liberty, Mo. Evangel will close out the regular conference season with a home game on Saturday, Feb. 23. Game time is 2 p.m. for the women’s game and 4 p.m. for the men’s contest. The seniors on both teams will be honored between the games.
