Volleyball Signs Mountain View Hitter

Evangel head volleyball coach Mary Penrod has signed Kala Spencer, a 5-foot-11 middle/right side hitter, to play on the 2008 Lady Crusaders’ volleyball team. Spencer lettered four years in volleyball and basketball at Mountain View (Mo.) Liberty Birch High School.

Spencer, who has been playing volleyball since the fourth grade, earned 1st team All-South Central South Conference honors in 2007 and was also picked as the conference MVP. In addition, Spencer was awarded 1st team all-district honors in volleyball as a senior and was a 2nd team all-conference basketball selection. She was named to the second all-conference and all-district teams as a junior. Spencer also played on the men’s golf team in high school, earning a letter in 2006.

During her senior volleyball season, Spencer led the team with 211 kills (3.0) and a kill percentage of 51.5. She also had a team-high 76 blocks (1.1) and led the serving with a 99.4 percentage, making just two errors in 341 attempts. Spencer also totaled 294 assists (4.1) and had 66 digs as her playing time was divided between the duties of a setter and middle blocker. The 2007 team captain, Spencer is ranked second in her senior class of 78 students and plans to major in journalism and English at Evangel. The student-athlete has a desire to coach and teach at the secondary level.
