Springfield, Mo. — Dr. Geoffrey W. Sutton, associate professor of psychology at Evangel University, has an analysis of Dr. Everett Worthington’s REACH model of forgiveness published in the current issue of the Journal of Psychology and Theology.
In his analysis, Sutton reviewed the biological and psychological research supporting Worthington’s stress model of forgiveness along with his lesser-known model of reconciliation. Worthington, professor of counseling psychology at Virginia Commonwealth University, recently presented his models at Evangel University. A formulation of these models can be found in “Forgiveness and Reconciliation” published in 2006 by Routledge.
Sutton, a 1972 Evangel graduate, completed his doctorate in psychology at the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1981, where he and Worthington became friends. Sutton has taught at Evangel since 2001. He conducts research on forgiveness and other virtues and is the author of more than 30 publications.
Sutton’s 2007 article is titled “Forgiveness: Psychological Theory, Research, and Practice.” It appears in volume 35 of the Journal of Psychology and Theology, and is available in the Evangel University library.
