Pentecostal Heritage Lectureship Series launched at EU

Dr. Stanley HortonSpringfield, Mo. — Evangel University will present the inaugural Dr. Stanley M. Horton Pentecostal Heritage Lectureship Series April 3 and 4, at 10 a.m. in the chapel auditorium.

The series is intended to reinforce the importance of the Pentecostal heritage of the Assemblies of God.

At age 91, Dr. Horton is a renowned scholar, a prolific writer and continues to travel the world as a lecturer. He has authored dozens of books and manuals, and he has published more than 250 articles and book reviews. He has been listed in Who’s Who in Religion and Outstanding Educators of America.

On Thursday, Evangel President Robert H. Spence will present Dr. Horton with a plaque in recognition of his lifetime accomplishments as an author, professor and “chief intellectual architect/spokesperson” for the Pentecostal doctrine for the Assemblies of God.

Dr. Stanley Horton

A Harvard graduate, Dr. Stanley Horton is distinguished professor emeritus of Bible and theology at the Assemblies of God Theological Seminary, where he taught from 1978-1991. Prior to that, he served as chair of the Bible Department at Central Bible College from 1948-1978.

His writings have appeared in publications as diverse as The Encyclopedia Americana and The Full-Life Study Bible. His book, What the Bible Says About the Holy Spirit (Gospel Publishing House, 1976), has long been the definitive text on that topic in universities and seminaries around the world.

Dr. Horton and his late-wife, Evelyn, were blessed with three children, two of which, Stan and Ed, are Evangel alumni.


Dr. William W. MenziesDr. William W. Menzies

Dr. William W. Menzies, president-emeritus and chancellor of Asia Pacific Theological Seminary in the Philippines, is also a highly respected author and teacher. He served as chair of the Biblical Studies Department at Evangel from 1970-1980. He was co-founder and the first president of the Society for Pentecostal Studies (1970-1971).

Among his nine books are Anointed to Serve (GPH, 1971) and one he co-authored with Dr. Horton, Bible Doctrines: A Pentecostal Perspective (GPH 1993). Throughout his career, he has also served on numerous committees pertaining the theological issues, including chairing the Commission on Doctrinal Purity for the Assemblies of God (1988-1990), and the Roman Catholic–Pentecostal Dialogue in Venice, Italy (1993).

Dr. Menzies and his wife, Doris, have two sons, Glenn and Bob, both of which are Evangel graduates.

Dr. Robert P. Menzies, author and teacher, completed his Ph.D. in New Testament studies in 1989 at the University of Aberdeen, Scotland, under the supervision of I. Howard Marshall. Among his several books is Spirit and Power: Foundations of Pentecostal Experience (Zondervan, 2000), which he co-authored with his father.

Bob met his wife, Joanne, while they were students at Evangel. They have two daughters — Jessica is currently in her sophomore year at Evangel, and Sarah will be a freshman at Evangel next fall.
