Five Lady Crusaders were awarded 2008 Daktronics-NAIA Softball Scholar-Athlete honors. The honored players are Cara Bowling (Jr., P, Girard, Ill.), Kaylee Nelson (Sr., UT, Edina, Minn.), Brooke Ragan (Sr., P, Wynne, Ark.), Georgette Richardson (Jr., 3B, Defiance, Ohio), and Kimberly Williams (Jr., P, Loveland, Colo.). The honor is the second in a row for Ragan. The five players are the largest softball class from Evangel to receive this award. The 2005 team held the previous record with four scholar-athletes.
The 2008 Lady Crusaders celebrated the 20th anniversary of Evangel softball with another banner season. Under the direction of head coach Jerry Breaux, who began his 15th year in 2008, Evangel won its ninth Heart of America Athletic Conference championship - the most by any EU team - and its fifth straight title. Breaux’s team also advanced to the NAIA Region V Tournament for the ninth overall and fifth consecutive season, finishing with a 28-18 record.
