Springfield, Mo — Evangel University’s Missouri Rho Chapter of the national Alpha Chi Honor Society recently received the President’s Cup, Alpha Chi’s highest national chapter award.
The award was given at this year’s Alpha Chi National Convention: Literacy 500, held April 2-4 in Indianapolis, Ind.
Six Evangel students attended the conference, along with faculty sponsor Dr. Laynah Rogers. Each of the six students presented research.
Founded in 1922, Alpha Chi is an interdisciplinary honor society in which membership is limited to the top 10 percent of junior and senior classes and graduate students. Evangel members must have at least a 3.83 grade point average on the 4.0 scale to be inducted.
The President’s Cup recognizes the outstanding society chapter in the nation that makes the most significant contribution in scholarship and service to their college or university.
The President’s Cup Outstanding Chapter Award is given biennially at the national meeting. The winning chapter keeps the President’s Cup trophy on its campus until the next convention, at which time a smaller replica is given to the chapter to keep permanently. In addition, the national office houses a larger President’s Cup trophy on which is engraved the names of all winners.
Alpha Chi awards the President’s Cup based on a chapter’s campus and community involvement, the number of student presentations, nominees for scholarships and participation in regional and national conventions.
The Awards Committee of the National Council judged chapter scrapbooks of activities and accomplishments. Some of the scholarly activities and accomplishments of Evangel’s Alpha Chi Missouri Rho Chapter include hosting a regional convention; induction ceremonies; monthly chapels; student and faculty research forums; a tutoring program; participating in community activities such as Habitat for Humanity, Writers Hall of Fame and a social responsibility grant; and awarding society honor cords. Since 2006, the chapter has received the Star Chapter award twice, and 20 Evangel students have presented research at Alpha Chi conventions. One member has served as national student representative.

There are more than 300 Alpha Chi chapters nationwide. The objectives of the honor society are to promote and to recognize superior scholarship and those elements of character, which make scholarship effective for service.
