SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Herbert Cooper, former Evangel football scholar-athlete and this year’s Outstanding Young Alumnus, will be the featured speaker at Evangel University, Sept. 8-11, during the annual Spiritual Emphasis Week.
“I am believing God to impact the lives of Evangel students in a tremendous way,” says Cooper, founder and senior pastor of People’s Church in Oklahoma City, Okla.
Cooper, a 1997 graduate of Evangel, will be speaking at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during the chapel services, and again at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Thursday in the Chapel Auditorium. On Friday, at 10 a.m., students will be sharing testimonies about their experiences with God.
The public is invited to attend.
“Evangel has students from a wide variety of academic disciplines and church backgrounds,” says John Plake, campus pastor. “During Spiritual Emphasis Week, we all come together to reconnect with God and with one another, around our faith in Jesus Christ. Background on the speaker
While at Evangel, Herbert Cooper was a member of the football team, a full-time student, and a part-time evangelist. Upon graduation, Cooper followed his calling to full-time evangelism and launched Herbert Cooper Ministries. He quickly became in demand as a speaker at revivals, youth camps, and conferences across America and around the world.
After five years on the road, Cooper and his wife, Tiffany, moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., to start People’s Church. The church has experienced rapid growth from its beginning in May 2002 with eight people gathered in their living room, to now serving approximately 2,600 in three identical Sunday services.
Cooper graced the cover of Today’s Pentecostal Evangel on May 24, 2009, and was one of the evening speakers at the Assemblies of God General Council 2009 conference in Orlando, Fla.
On Oct. 9, Cooper will be receiving the 2009 Outstanding Young Alumnus Award from the Evangel University Alumni Association.
