SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Chelsea Smith, daughter of Dennis and Janet Smith, Wynne, Ark., will be performing her senior voice recital at Evangel University Friday, Oct. 2, at 7:30 p.m., in the Barnett Fine Arts Recital Hall. There is no charge for admittance, and the public is invited to attend.
Smith’s performance will be a certificate recital, which requires more than 60 minutes of memorized repertoire. She will be performing 70 minutes.
“This is the equivalent of an honors recital,” says Jane Munson-Berg, voice instructor and director of Evangel’s opera workshop. “The literature must be more difficult, and only an advanced singer can attempt this.”
Smith, a music education major at Evangel, is a student of Jane Munson-Berg.
Among the highlights of the program, Smith will be singing “Les oiseaux dans la charmille” (Doll Song), one of the most famous arias from Offenbach’s Les Contes D’Hoffman.

Jena Cantrell and Danny Gutierrez will be joining Smith in Mozart’s The Impresario: Trio, libretto co-written by Jane Munson-Berg. This is a reprise of their performance last spring for the Springfield Regional Opera Young Artists Series.
For this performance, Mozart’s well-known one-act comedy about two divas battling for a leading role and romance with a Viennese impresario has been updated to modern times in a hilarious depiction of stereotypical operatic egos and personalities.
Munson-Berg’s libretto and dialogue was originally a collaboration with local singers Carol Chapman and Jeff Carney, but the piece has evolved into a unique and highly personal pictorial of real-life experiences in the lyric theatre.
“Some of the funniest lines and jokes are from real life. Nothing in this is an exaggeration,” says Munson-Berg. “I really think these young singers are even funnier than the originals.”
Piano accompaniment will be provided by Beth Falukos.
