SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — David Bigelow, assistant professor of art at Evangel University, will be participating in Japan’s first professional outdoor art fair, the Yokohama International Open-Air Art Fair, which runs Oct. 30 through Nov. 1, in Yokohama, Japan.

His daughter, Meredith Baker, will accompany him. She became interested in Japanese art in high school and has studied the language and customs.

The International Art and Craft Promotion, in association with the City of Yokohama, invited 12 American artists to participate along with 20 Japanese artists. The Port of Yokohama will be celebrating the 150th anniversary of opening up to western trade.

The aim of the fair is to facilitate a rich life environment with art by bringing Japanese and American artists and their communities closer, and creating a venue where people can casually pick up their favorite artwork.

“It’s a great honor to be chosen among the first to represent American art to the Japanese in person,” says Bigelow. “I’m looking forward to seeing Japanese artworks firsthand, and meeting and working with other artists who share the same passion as I do.”
