Springfield, Mo — The Evangel University forensics team, under the leadership of Dr. Mark Kelton, associate professor of communication, participated in the Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Speech Tournament held at Kansas City (Kan.) Community College this past weekend.
- Zachary Kidder and Elise Hartman earned 3rd place for Dramatic Duo.
Kidder is a sophomore electronic media major from Plymouth, Wis., and Hartman is a junior communication studies major from Battle Creek, Mich.
- George Flattery and Alyseia Smith earned 4th place for Dramatic Duo.
Flattery is a junior advertising and public relations major from Tinley Park, Ill., and Smith is a junior advertising and public relations major from Rockford, Ill.
- Zachary Kidder earned 6th place for Dramatic Interpretation.
- Griffin McGrath earned 6th place for Informative Speaking.
McGrath is a junior biblical studies and communication studies double major from Chandler, Ariz.
In addition, the following students attended and participated in their first intercollegiate forensics tournament. “Most of them received a ‘1’ or ‘2’ in at least one of their preliminary rounds and were close to breaking into finals,” said Dr. Kelton.
- Jeremy Eutsler, sophomore biological chemistry major from Springfield, Mo.
- Jennifer Olson, senior journalism major from Savage, Minn.
- Christopher Orr, freshman psychology major from Fair Grove, Mo.
- Keara Risla, junior communication studies major from Billings, Mont.
- Kristen Sauer, junior English major from Houston, Texas
- Samantha Smith, junior communication studies and English double major from Conway, Mo.
- Chelsea Stout, junior communication studies major from Independence, Mo.
“An interesting side note is that this tournament gave out ‘recycled’ trophies to the winners,” said Dr. Kelton. “For example, Zach Kidder received a trophy with a ‘bowler’ on the top from the 1980s. The trophy still had the original inscription on it with the ‘new inscription’ of Zach’s win placed on the back of the trophy — a clever way of saving money, as trophies are typically the number one tournament expense,” Kelton said.
