Springfield, Mo — The Department of Social Sciences at Evangel University will present its 2010 Regius Award to Dr. John Deegan on April 26, 2010, during the department’s annual banquet.
Deegan, a 1967 political science graduate, currently serves as a distinguished professor of national security studies at the National Defense University in Washington, D.C.
Since 1990, Evangel’s social sciences department has been presenting an annual Regius Award to honor its alumni for outstanding professional accomplishments. Last year’s honoree was Dr. Troy Paino, president of Truman State University.
Dr. John Deegan graduated from Evangel University with a B.A. in political science in 1967. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in political science from the University of Michigan-Ann Arbor.
In the early 1980s, Deegan directed investigations for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency at the notorious Love Canal site, an abandoned hazardous waste dump near Niagara Falls, N.Y., and was awarded the EPA Bronze Medal for outstanding achievement and exceptional expertise.
In addition, Dr. Deegan has previously served as an assistant professor at Rice University, associate professor at the University of Rochester, associate dean of public health at the University of Illinois-Chicago, dean of social and behavioral sciences at the University of Northern Iowa, provost and professor at the University of Southern Maine, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the college at Westminster College, president at St. Andrews Presbyterian College, and provost and vice president for academic affairs at the National Defense University.
