Springfield, Mo — Evangel University student media recently received awards from the 2010 Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) national contest and from the 2010 Missouri College Media Association (MCMA) state competition. Both contests recognize excellent student media produced during 2009.
SCJ is a national honor society. Membership in the Evangel chapter requires at least two semesters of media staff service. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is also required. There are 10 active members in Evangel’s SCJ chapter.
Entries in the SCJ contest are judged against entries from colleges and universities across the nation. Professional journalists serve as the contest judges.
MCMA is the state organization for student print media and is affiliated with the Missouri Press Association. The Lance and Excalibur are members of MCMA.
The Lance newspaper received six awards from the SCJ contest and 19 awards in MCMA’s Division 3 contest. Kelly Bevill, senior journalism major of Albany, Ore., served as editor in spring 2009. December 2009 graduate Bethany Bashioum served as editor in the fall. Melinda Booze, assistant professor of communication, is the faculty adviser.
