Springfield, Mo — Evangel senior Jessica Piñón is the recipient of a $750 Castañeda Memorial Scholarship through the International Studies Abroad (ISA) program.
Piñón is an international and multicultural studies major from Harlingen, Texas. She is the daughter of Peter and Estela Piñón.
This summer, Piñón will be traveling to Meknès, Morocco, where she will study at Moulay Ismail University. She will receive six credit hours toward her degree by taking the courses “Gender Studies: The Case of Morocco” and “Islamic Society and Politics.”
“I feel greatly honored that I was chosen to receive the Castañeda Memorial scholarship. It has enabled me to pursue my dream of studying abroad in Morocco,” said Piñón.
As a student at Evangel, Piñón has been a member Pi Gamma Mu, the Social Sciences National Honor Society, and she has been a work study in the Public Relations Office. After graduation, she plans to pursue a Master of Public Health with an emphasis in both global health and maternal and child health at the University of Texas School of Public Health in Houston, Texas.
“One day, I would like to work with women and children of Islamic cultures in Africa and the Middle East, which is a primary motivation for my interest in Morocco,” said Piñón. “By studying with ISA, I will be given the opportunity to immerse myself within the African and Islamic cultures and gain more insight toward my future.”
The ISA, a leading provider in study abroad, offers 38 university-based semester programs throughout Europe, Latin America and North Africa and 34 summer programs.
The ISA offers $40,000 annually in Castañeda Memorial Scholarships to be used toward ISA programs.
In pursuit of its goals of enhancing cultural awareness and providing students with the independence and language skills necessary for the workplace, the Castañeda Memorial Scholarships helps those who may not otherwise be able to study abroad
