Protecting yourself and others from infection

September 8, 2009

Hand washing

Good hand washing has been proven to be one of the most important ways to prevent the spread of infection. Make a habit of washing your hands vigorously with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Do this frequently throughout the day, especially before eating or drinking, after using the bathroom or after coughing or sneezing. Use a paper towel to turn off the faucet and to open the bathroom door. Use alcohol-based hand sanitizers when you are unable to wash your hands.

Respiratory etiquette and hygiene

Keep a distance from people who have flu and cold symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, runny nose and fever. Avoid direct face-to-face contact with people who are ill. Do not share food, drinks or personal items (even with your close friends). Try to avoid touching your face and rubbing your eyes, nose and mouth as much as possible. People who are sick should cover their cough and sneezes and should wash their hands frequently. (See information for roommates.)

Healthy lifestyle

You can also protect yourself and strengthen your immune system by choosing a healthy lifestyle. Make nutritious food choices, drink plenty of water and other fluids, get adequate sleep and stay physically active. Do not let yourself become over-tired.

Routine cleaning

Frequently clean and disinfect high-touch and common-use areas room (counters, table tops, doorknob, keyboards, telephones).
