How we support at-risk students

Evangel strives to provide a variety of support for students who struggle with everything from homesickness to grades, but we cannot reach out to assist students if we do not know they are struggling.

To assist with this task we have created a number of tools.

Watch List

Research tells us what factors may make the transition to college more difficult for a student. We have created a list of new students and identified these factors for each person. Each factor is given a point value. For example, just being a freshman earns you a point, as does a low ACT reading score or being an international student. Students with a certain number of points go on a watch list. This list is sent to the student’s advisor so that the advisor can make extra efforts to support that student throughout their first year at Evangel.

Student Alerts

Professors see our students on a regular basis and can easily provide critical information about specific behaviors that may indicate the student is struggling. Our professors use a Student Alert form to share information with the Office of Retention. This information is then passed on to the student’s advisor, or a Student Development or Community Life staff member asking them to reach out to the student.

The form’s checklist includes such things as:

We want you to know that we are doing everything we can to ensure your student has a successful college career at Evangel. Identifying obstacles early and partnering with a student to overcome them helps us to accomplish that task. Some students do not need additional support, and some do. Many receive extra support and never know it because all alert and survey information is CONFIDENTIAL.

Whether your student is on an alert list or not, faculty and staff are praying daily and specifically for your student. That is something we all do to support our students while God is preparing each of them for their future after Evangel.

If you feel your student needs a Student Alert or to be placed on the Watch List, please e-mail Director of Retention Becky Spain.
