Evangel University Student Profile

OrrieOrrie

Class of 2011
Hometown: Green Bay, Wisconsin
Major: Physical Education
Minor: Sports Administration

As a high school student Orrie looked for a college where his professors would take the time to learn his name and where the campus community would encourage him in his walk with God.

Now at Evangel, he has been encouraged by professors who have taken the time to get to know him and has enjoyed their integration of faith in the classroom. In his second year of college, Orrie got involved as a “Big Brother” for the Big Brother Big Sisters of the Ozarks and has participated in an on-site practicum at an elementary school.

Why did you choose Evangel?

Evangel was my first choice. I wanted a fresh start. I also knew that this would be a place where I would make lasting friendships with other Christians.

Did you receive financial aid?

I receive an academic and a departmental scholarship.

Why did you choose to study Physical Education?

I want to work in sports and coach some day. I also enjoy seeing people grow in both athletics and character.

What do you like about the campus?

I like Evangel because of its size and how you can know people wherever you go on campus.

What do you like about being an Evangel student?

I like how the professors really get to know each student on a personal level and learn our names. I also like the fact that they take faith into consideration into every class.

Have you had any internships or practicums yet? What valuable experience do you take away from that?

This semester I had a practicum in an elementary physical education class. I learned how to properly keep children under control and how to better communicate with younger children. I also had some experience leading the class as well. Physical Education majors do not have as much bookwork as other majors; much of the learning is done in a hands-on approach.

Why did you decide to go to a school so far away from home?

I needed a change of scenery, and I love new adventures.

What are your personal and career goals after college?

One of my goals after college is to attend graduate school and to start a career in the professional sports world, as well. I would also like to travel to Europe and possibly Australia.

What are the benefits to attending a smaller university?

Attending a smaller university allows me to make many great friendships with students and professors alike. I also think that a smaller university is much more concerned with every student’s success.

So far, what kind of educational/service/leadership opportunities have you encountered?

One service opportunity I have had is to be a Big Brother mentor to a third-grader at the Boys and Girls Club. It is very rewarding to see how I can have a positive impact on someone’s life.

What does it mean to you to pursue God’s calling?

To me, pursuing God’s calling is to love with Christ always in the forefront. For me, Evangel University was a part of that picture. I knew this was a place where I could focus on the Lord and grow in my relationship with Him. I have the philosophy that if you are not improving, you are regressing; and for me, Evangel is a place where I can improve.

What are your top strengths and how do you use them?

Adaptability: I feel that I can successfully adjust to a variety of different situations.
Input: I can offer advice for people who may ask me for it.
Developer: One of my passions is to see people grow into their potential.
Learner: I love to learn about anything and everything. Being a well-rounded individual is important to me.
Consistency: I try to treat everyone the same no matter who they are.

*Evangel University is one of 600 universities which use Gallup's strengths-based, leadership-development program. All students learn what their top five strengths are, and leadership training during their years at Evangel helps them to develop and maximize these talents.
