Two months before she enrolled at Evangel University, Angie Okai's family moved from Kumasi, Ghana to the Detroit area to be missionaries to the Africans living in the city. As a student at Evangel, Angie is studying to be a nurse. She is very involved in EU's international student club.
I have always wanted to go to college after high school and thought I have to do it too in addition to the ministry God has given my family and me. I chose EU because I was not experiencing the presence of God as I wanted in my previous college. I believe God led me to Evangel for a reason.
Moving with my family from Ghana to Southfield, Michigan was a great challenge. Two months after we settled in, I had to leave for college. The terms, strategies and language differences were very hard for me to cope with in the transition.
I miss home, but most of the time it does not overcome me. I stayed in the boarding house for three years of high school, so I am kind of used to it.
There is a significant connection that I have with other international students. Also, the people here are very friendly toward minority students.
I believe God reveals His plans and places me in the right position to meet them. This is where I am meant to be. God's calling is irreversible and irrevocable. It's very strong.
