Evangel University Student Profile

Taylor Rutledge

Taylor Rutledge

Class of 2013
Hometown: Lamar, Missouri
Major: Elementary/Middle School Education

Taylor always wanted to attend a university in Springfield, Missouri, so she could be close to extended family. Out of all the college choices available in Springfield (there are six), she chose Evangel because she loved the Christian atmosphere that she could not find elsewhere. Taylor is now pursuing her degree in Education and plans to continue her education through the master's level, so she can become a principal or elementary counselor.

Why did you choose Evangel?

I have extended family here and always knew I wanted to attend a Springfield college.  When visiting Evangel, I loved the Christian atmosphere and felt that Evangel was where God was calling me to be.

Did you visit Evangel before becoming a student?

Yes, I visited three times. Once during my junior year of high school and twice during my senior year — once staying with a Bed and Breakfast host and then attending eu:24.

Did you receive financial aid?

Yes, scholarships and loans.

How did you decide on your particular areas of study?

Throughout my life I have had amazing teachers who have given me a passion for learning. I want to instill in others that same feeling. I also have always had a love for children and have believed for a long time that God has called me to teach.

What do you like best about Evangel?

My favorite thing about Evangel is living in a dorm. At first I thought the idea of having to live on campus most of my time at school would not be enjoyable, but I was wrong. I greatly enjoy having others, freshmen through seniors, on my floor who are great for advice, homework help and are just wonderful friends.

How is Evangel's elementary education program preparing you for your future career?

By giving me great training I know I can use in the classroom. Most, if not all, of the professors have taught in school and so I feel I get real advice and not just "textbook" advice.

What kind of educational, service and leadership opportunities have you had?

Over Spring Break 2010 I am going to England as a student leader for a missions trip. I am also the president of my floor in Burgess Hall, the Freshman Class Public Relations Officer, and a work-study for the Education Department.

Why should a prospective student consider Evangel?

Evangel is just a great place to be. I have never encountered an unfriendly person or a professor who was not willing to help me succeed. While at first I was weary of God working out my financial situation for me to come to Evangel, God worked that out for me. Prospective students need to know that if God is calling them to Evangel, He will work that out as well.
