What’cha doin’ with your summer?

July 26th, 2012 | Shonna Crawford

As Evangel professors and students, we often find ourselves in a different routine in the summer time.  Our summer “break” takes many of us to places away from our campus and our normal routine.

Recently I was inspired to write this blog entitled, “What’cha doin’ with your summer?” after listening to a few amazing sermons at my church and also after receiving a text from a close friend.

I started to ask myself some questions.  As we are taking a break from the intense routine school provides, what opportunities is God giving us?  How are we responding to these opportunities?  Are we even seeing them, or are we just zoned out?

When summer break begins, I can’t wait to take a break from the rigorous routine each semester brings. But this summer I’ve been reflecting on how God wants me to purposely pursue Him even in moments of leisure, however brief they may be.  So, what’cha doin’ with your summer?  I’m realizing that taking a break from routine comes guilt-free when you are anchored into God’s purpose for you.  Breaking from classes at Evangel doesn’t mean breaking from hearing from God or trusting in Him to sustain you.  Pursuing God in your “down-time” makes the rest all the sweeter.

Faculty and staff at Evangel are already busy making preparation for students and can’t wait to see you back on campus or on our campus for the first time in August.  God has great things ahead of us this fall semester as we run the race for Him.  So, before school begins and you are snugly back into that rigid routine … what’cha doin’ with your summer? How can you serve God in your summer job?  How can you really make a difference in the life of a friend or family member?  How can you pursue God with all that you are?  Don’t wait until you’re back here at school. Get recharged by resting in the Lord before you gear up for another semester.

That text I mentioned from my friend included 1 Peter 5:6-11 from The Message.

5-6 So be content with who you are, and don’t put on airs. God’s strong hand is on you; he’ll promote you at the right time. Live carefree before God; he is most careful with you.

8-11 Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up. You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith. The suffering won’t last forever. It won’t be long before this generous God who has great plans for us in Christ—eternal and glorious plans they are!—will have you put together and on your feet for good. He gets the last word; yes, he does.

This passage says it all … live in God’s freedom.  He made you just the way you are and wants to live in constant relationship with you. So, live full-on and go all out for His glory wherever you find yourself this summer.  Don’t spend the remainder of the summer spiritually asleep.  God’s got things for you to do. What’cha doin’ with your summer?  I hope you are feeling carefree, experiencing all God has for you, so that you come back refreshed and ready for an awesome fall semester!
