Dressing up for good deeds

November 5th, 2012 | Hope Hamilton

As a Christian college student, deciding what to do for such a momentous occasion as the last day of October can be quite distressing. We are no longer children, we no longer possess very much of a cuteness makes-people-want-to-give-you-candy factor, we don’t have a lot of money to throw around, and yet we have a free night where everyone wants to do something fun.

This October 31st, CROSSwalk student ministries came up with the perfect solution to these college student blues: an outreach.

The week before Halloween, a group of students went into a neighborhood in Springfield and distributed paper bags with a paper asking people to fill the bags with non-perishable items to be gathered by Evangel students on the 31st.

As the night of the 31st rolled around, about 25 students gathered in rather odd dress (I was in a taco suit), and set out to find the neighborhood where the bags had been handed out. Finding the neighborhood proved to be somewhat of an adventure, but after an hour of driving in circles, all of us arrived safely.

We split off into groups, and we each went door-to-door asking people if they had any donations. We were blown away by the generosity we received. Many families had set one or two bags of donations on their front porch for us to pick up, and many more had the bags waiting right inside. Some people were so excited to see us and give what they had gathered.

Through the course of the night we had collected hundreds of bags, amounting to 765 pounds of food for the local homeless outreach, Victory Mission.

That night I got to spend time with dear friends, make new friends and help make a difference in this community. It was great to see students reaching out and even praying with some of the people in the neighborhood who were in need. It’s also so amazing to know that this whole idea and ministry is student led, and we have been blessed with great leaders who take their time to make outreach happen in our community.
