Evangel after dark

The college experience is more than classes and exams. What goes on when the day of classes is said and done is a major part of the college experience. In my own time at Evangel, some of my best memories are ones that were made with my friends hanging out in downtown Springfield or at one of Evangel’s many nighttime events.
On-campus nighttime events are where it’s at, and Evangel’s Activities Board (AB) is behind most of the fun. AB is a student organization that plans many of our campus events. These activities are great times to hang out with friends and meet new ones. The biggest event of this semester was Harvest Fest. This costume party/variety show is one of the many events that AB hosts. Other events held recently were the EU County Fair, a dodge ball tournament and the ever-popular DVD Bingo.
There are plenty of free music events on campus to keep students entertained as well, among them concerts are some of the best. Evangel’s musical groups always put on great performances. There are usually one or two jazz concerts per semester as well as several smaller jazz events that take place in the student union. Orchestra concerts also draw a large crowd and give students the opportunity to hear some great music.
Being a Christian college, we have the privilege of awesome activities here on campus to build us up spiritually as well. 24 Hours of Praise and Worship is just one of these you have to experience. You’ll also find spontaneous worship bands spring up around campus some evenings. Floor devos and other discipleship activities help us grow together with our friends.
Off campus there are plenty of things to keep students busy at night. Springfield has its own ice skating rink; this is a very popular place for students to go for a fun night out without costing much. There are also bowling alleys located close to campus.
However, most people spend their nights visiting one or more of Springfield’s many coffee shops. There are a few popular ones like The Coffee Ethic and Mudhouse. These two are located in the center of downtown Springfield. They offer a great place to study with friends or to hang out for a few hours on a Friday night.
Downtown Springfield has many other attractions as well. There is a movie theater located just a block away from the square, which is the center of activity for any evening in Springfield. On the other side of the square just a few blocks away is 1984, a vintage arcade with all the classic arcade games you never knew existed, a few of them with my own personal high scores on them.
All of this is only a fraction of the attractions that can be found on or off campus. Let me assure that you won’t get bored at Evangel. No matter where you choose to hang out, on or off campus, there are memories to be made and incredible new friends to make them with.
