Celebrating Christmas at Evangel

December 11th, 2013 | Shannyn Wong

Well, it’s that time of year once again, and Christmas has snuck up like usual.

This is one of my favorite times to be on campus because everyone is in Christmas mode (some were even in Christmas mode before Thanksgiving)!

Since we are on campus usually a week before Christmas, Evangel is fully in the holiday spirit. If you are looking at the dorms from a parking lot, you will see twinkling lights in windows, and you might spot a mini Christmas tree or two. Each hall takes to decorating in a way unique to its culture and personality. The lobby decorations in the halls are just the beginning. Floors go all-out decorating for Christmas, and some even have decorating contests. You will definitely know which holiday is coming up by walking around the residence halls.

The building that gets the most traffic during Christmas time is Riggs Hall. The first building that people see when they come to campus will be sure to fill them with holiday cheer. Each year Evangel kicks off the season with the official tree lighting in Riggs. Students, staff and faculty gather around the BIG Christmas tree for the ceremony of the BIG Christmas tree that calls Riggs home. An extra treat is the homemade cookies that Evangel staff make for all the students who come.

Cozy in the Joust

Cozy in the Joust is always so much fun.

One of the highlights of this season is the annual Christmas Concert that the choirs and orchestra put on for Evangel and the Springfield community. Every year, this concert is a big hit. You will hear the traditional Christmas songs, but there will be some surprises that leave you speechless. Last year’s concert blew me away when they played “Little Drummer Boy” and the EU Marching Band drummers came down the aisle … it was amazing!

Activities Board also hosts its annual Cozy in the Joust, where students can gather around for some Christmas music, Christmas stories and hot cocoa.

Throughout the academic buildings, you will see the departments decorating for Christmas. One of the first places that I saw decorated for Christmas was the cafeteria. Lights streamed the hallway and ornaments hung from the ceiling.

As you walk across Evangel’s campus, Christmas will surround you. You might say that Christmas is our favorite time of the year, and you are probably right. After all, as a Christian campus we all share our belief in the true meaning of the season.

One thing is for sure: Evangel loves Christmas, and we give you plenty of opportunities to join in on the fun.
