Joining the Evangel Marching Band

The marching band has become an integral part of life at Evangel. The band will perform at all home football games, local parades and various school events, such as Homecoming, EU Launch and EU24. Additionally, the band will participate in one major trip every three to four years, for instanceMacy’s Thanksgiving Day ParadeRose Bowl Parade, etc.

The Marching Band is open to all students regardless of major and is an excellent way to become involved. Through our marching program you will gain:

  • Exposure
  • Recruitment
  • Prestige
  • Educational Experience
  • Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to be a music major to be in the marching band?

No. All majors are welcome in the band.

Do you have to audition to be in the marching band?

The drumline auditions for part placement on snares, tenors, basses, and cymbals, otherwise no audition is required for band members to be in the marching band.

What if I’ve never marched before, or only parade marched?

Not a big deal. There are many people in the band who have never stepped foot on a football field. We all meet a week before school starts so everyone can learn the basics of field marching. We also do a little parade marching, but everyone learns how.

How much time does marching band take?

We meet two times a week, Tuesday and Thursday, from 3:30-5:30 p.m. during the semester. Before school starts in the fall, we meet approximately a week before to learn the basics, which as a bonus, lets you move in before the mad rush of everyone else arrives. We play every home football game, plus a handful of other performances.

What if I don’t play an instrument, but still want to be in marching band?

There are options for you. The Evangel University has a color guard, open to anyone, who use flags and rifle. They are willing to teach any person, regardless of experience. The EU Marching Band does have a front line (pit). Any person wanting to play piano, marimba, vibraphone, electric bass, or other non-marching equipment can still be a part of the band.

What fees are associated with marching band?

There is a yearly band fee, which goes towards the cleaning of the uniforms and other miscellaneous items. First time band members are to pay for their shoes and a band t-shirt or polo.

Am I compensated for the time I put in?

Yes, a $300 scholarship is awarded to all members of the marching band, including color guard (it is higher for section leaders and drum majors). Additional scholarships are available through the Department of Music.

Why should I be in marching band?

Marching band is a very fun experience. The Evangel University Marching Band will be the largest student organization on campus, but still maintains a “family” atmosphere with opportunities to make friendships and memories that last a lifetime.

I am going to be in band! Now what do I do?

Welcome to 2013 Participants

Dear E.U. Marching Band Members (and others),

Plans are well underway for this year’s E.U. Marching Band! We have some exciting plans for the group and would love to have you be a member in this exciting and energetic ensemble.

Included on this website you can find information concerning both the band camp (starting August 17-18, 2013) and fall schedule. In addition, there is other information concerning what you will need, etc.

As the spring and summer progresses, please check the this site regularly. Latest news and announcements, as well as some music and audition materials, can be found at the site (instructions for downloading music will be posted during late spring).

This year we will perform for the home football games, the Evangel University Celebration of Christmas concert, Silver Dollar City Christmas Parade, and the Springfield, MO, Christmas Parade. There are literally thousands of people that are making plans to see you perform this fall … everyone is excited!

Our shows (there are three of them!) will be a fun, high-energy event. Again, some of the music (and links to recordings) will be made available on our website (and in your E.U. student portal). We look forward to seeing you later this summer and getting started. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact us anytime.

See you in the fall!

    A Few Things . . .

    We won’t over-work you.
We won’t risk heat injuries (please bring fans, water, and sunscreen).
There will be plenty of time to eat, sleep and socialize.
We aim to have fun and get the job done – no “boot camp” atmosphere allowed.
Camp attendance is required. Please contact me as soon as possible about concerns or possible conflicts.
The Fall Band Syllabus will be made available to you soon.
In the mean time, the most frequently asked question is, “What do I have to buy for Band/Color Guard?” Here’s a list:

Black Marching shoes – around $25 (your high school shoes might work). If possible, have these before camp begins. They can be purchased at AmericanBand.com (either Drill Masters or Super Drill Masters will work).
T-shirts, shorts, and baseball cap will be provided!
Lyres – estimated cost: $5 for the lyre – chances are excellent the actual cost will be less. If possible, have these before camp begins.
Accessories – reeds, neckstraps, etc. – we will furnish the first pair of snare sticks and other percussion mallets/beaters – you buy your replacements.
Guard uniforms (including gloves), flags, and rifles will be provided.
Students will pay for repairs on loaned college owned instruments. Instruments will be loaned in excellent working condition.
Students will be required to keep their marching uniforms clean. Students will be required to have the uniforms professionally cleaned before they are returned at the end of the season (approximately $6).
Meals and housing during camp are provided.
    A few other reminders . . .

It is suggested that you have a pair of khaki trousers for certain events. WE DO NOT WEAR DENIM FOR OFFICIAL BAND FUNCTIONS OR TRAVEL.
    Rehearsal Attire Guidelines:
    i. Full tank-tops or full t-shirts are acceptable for rehearsals. Sports bras, bikini tops, etc. are not appropriate.
ii. Tennis Shoes are to be worn at all times. Flip-flops, sandals, bare feet, etc. will not be allowed at any time during rehearsals.
