Evangel business students learn to Dress for Success

Published on Mar 31, 2012 by Jennifer Hall

SPRINGFIELD, MO — Dillard’s department store recently teamed up with Evangel University’s Department of Business to bring students a unique look at professional attire for the workplace.

The display is designed to showcase proper interview apparel and accessories for young professionals.

Becky Rhoades, associate professor of accounting, said that the purpose was to help students know what to expect when heading to an interview.

“The challenge for college students, when it comes to interviewing, is that they are preparing for an occasion unlike any other. Dressing for an interview is not like dressing up for a night out on the town,” said Rhoades.

“I wanted the Business Department to have a Dress for Success display to help students navigate these uncharted waters.”

She added that although different environments require different attire, it is important for students to know how to prepare for an interview.

“Dressing appropriately for an interview says that you’ve done your homework. It can set you apart from other interviewees,” said Rhoades.

Rhoades is also the faculty advisor of the student-led public relations team for the department.

The PR team was responsible for organizing and putting together the display, which can be viewed on the first floor of Zimmerman Hall in the showcase beside the Department of Business.

Ashley Gingerich, a junior marketing major at Evangel, said that working with Dillard’s was a gratifying experience.

“Dillard’s played a huge role in helping the display to look professional. They allowed us to borrow almost everything in the display case at no cost,” said Gingerich.

The display also features photos of the six business seniors from Evangel who were selected for the 2012 “Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.”

Evangel’s Department of Business offers majors in accounting, business education, finance, management, marketing and public administration. For more information, contact the department chair, Bernie Dana, at danab@evangel.edu
