Evangel University student media win national recognitions through Society of Collegiate Journalists

ECTV, Excalibur and The Lance receive awards for 2011 print and broadcast productions

 SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—Evangel student media recently received awards from the 2012 Society for Collegiate Journalists (SCJ) national contest.

 These contests recognize excellent student media produced during 2011. Professional media members serve as contest judges.

 Excalibur

The Excalibur, Evangel’s yearbook, received two awards from SCJ, including the highest SCJ award in the small schools category:

 First Place award:

  • Yearbook Overall Excellence, small schools

 Second Place award:

  • Photography

 Samantha Smith, May 2011 graduate, was Excalibur editor.

 Nancy Pace-Miller, assistant professor of communication, is the faculty adviser.

The Lance

Evangel’s student newspaper, The Lance, received six awards from the SCJ contest:

 First Place awards:

  • Front Page, design and content, junior journalism major Christine Temple
  • News Stories, Christine Temple

 Second Place award:

  • News Photography, Christine Temple

 Third Place awards:

  • Graphic Illustrations, senior film major Lorane (Raini) Way
  • News Photography, sophomore journalism major Jessica Nunley
  • Photo Essay, Jessica Nunley

 Christine Temple is The Lance editor in chief.

 Melinda Booze, assistant professor of communication, is the faculty adviser.

ECTV

Evangel’s television station, ECTV, received two SCJ awards as follows:

  • TV News Show Overall Excellence, Honorable Mention, NewsWatch Today
  • TV News Show Overall Excellence, Honorable Mention, Sports Update

NewsWatch co-producers in fall 2011 were senior broadcasting major Justin Dougherty and junior broadcasting major Caleb Campbell. Dougherty was also Sports Update producer for spring 2011.

Sports Update producer for fall 2011 was sophomore broadcasting major Robert Kidd and director was senior broadcasting major Robert Martin.

Dr. Cameron Pace, professor of communication, is the faculty adviser.

SCJ is a national honor society. Membership in the Evangel chapter requires at least two semesters of media staff service. A minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 is
also required. There are 12 active members in Evangel’s SCJ chapter.

Entries in the SCJ contest are judged against entries from colleges and universities across the nation.
