SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel University Humanities Department will host a lecture by Dr. James S. Baumlin titled “John Milton and the Politics of Private Inspiration” on Monday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. in Trask Hall, Room 107.

The lecture is free and open to the public.

Milton’s claims of Spirit-guidance make him, arguably, the first great English poet to embrace a charismatic theology.  In his lecture, Baumlin will explore Milton’s inspired “prophetic ethos,” as depicted in selected prose works and major poems.

Baumlin, who has a doctorate degree from Brown University, is currently a professor of English at Missouri State University. He is a prolific author, editor, reviewer and lecturer.

Baumlin’s latest book is Theologies of Language in English Renaissance Literature: Reading Shakespeare, Donne, and Milton.

Evangel University is a private, Christian university of arts, sciences and professions. With an enrollment of more than 2,000 students from all 50 states and abroad, Evangel offers more than 100 undergraduate academic programs and nine master’s programs.
