Evangel University Chorale and Chorus to perform Nov. 8

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – The two major choral ensembles of Evangel University, the chorus and chorale, will present a combined concert on Thursday, Nov. 8, at 7:30 p.m. in the Barnett Fine Arts Recital Hall.  

There is no charge for admission, and the public is invited to attend.

The chorale will feature a diverse program featuring the music of composers such as Schutz, Stanford, Nystedt, Gawthrop and Cheetham. A touch of the holidays will be included in the performance of A Celtic Christmas, by composer Philip Stopford.

The chorale is directed by Dr. Richard Honea, professor of music.

The chorus will perform during the second half of the concert with an extended work by Kansas City composer Mark Hayes entitled Magnificat. They will be joined by a small instrumental ensemble.

Senior Benjamin Whitmore will conduct a piece written by Jason Salazar, assistant professor of music, entitled Canticle of Praise. The concert will conclude with the timeless Song of Exaltation, composed by John Ness Beck.

The chorus is directed by Tom Matrone, associate professor of music.

“This is proving to be a great concert,” said Matrone. “We are proud to present these works with a heartfelt expression of faith to bring honor and glory to God.”

The chorale will perform the following pieces:

  • Sing to the Lord a New Song, composed by Heinrich Schutz
  • Justorum Animae (from Three Motets), composed by Charles Villiers Stanford
  • Song of Praise, composed by Knut Nystedt
  • Sing Me to Heaven, composed by Daniel E. Gawthrop
  • Reflections From a Country Parson, composed by John Cheetham
  • A Celtic Christmas, composed by Philip Stopford
    1. Once in Royal David’s City – Junior Stephanie Kopf, soprano
    2. Wexford Carol – Junior Cara Payton, soprano
    3.  I saw Three Ships – Senior Ana Woods, flute

The chorus will perform the following pieces:
