Evangel University Orchestra to feature flute soloists, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 in fall concert

November 5, 2012 | Paul K. Logsdon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — The Evangel University Orchestra will present its fall concert on Tuesday, Nov. 13 at 7:30 p.m. in the University’s Chapel Auditorium.

The concert is free and open to the public.

The program will feature two senior flute soloists in a performance of Franz and Karl Doppler’s Hungarian Fantasy.  After opening with Kabalevsky’s Colas Breugnon Overture, the orchestra also will perform Beethoven’s acclaimed Symphony No. 3 (also known as the Eroica, which is Italian for “heroic”).

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 3 is regarded as the most significant orchestral work at the beginning of the nineteenth century. Beethoven intended to dedicate his Symphony No. 3 to Napoleon Bonaparte because he regarded him as the people’s hero.  However, when Beethoven heard that Napoleon had declared himself to be emperor of France, he tore up the original title page and wrote instead, “Heroic Symphony, Composed to Celebrate the Memory of a Great Man.”

The Evangel University Orchestra is directed by Dr. Larry Dissmore.

Dorothy Lason and Katrina McCutchen will be the flute soloists in the Doppler Hungarian Fantasy.  Both are senior music education majors, and both currently serve as drum majors of the Evangel University Marching Band.

Dorothy Lason is from Mesa, Ariz., and is the daughter of Garry and Linda Lason.

Katrina McCutchen is from Bedford, Texas, and is the daughter of Charles and Carla McCutchen.

Evangel University is a private, Christian university of arts, sciences and professions. With an enrollment of more than 2,000 students from all 50 states and abroad, Evangel offers more than 100 undergraduate academic programs and nine master’s programs.
