Evangel University professor Geoffrey W. Sutton publishes article for Alpha Chi

February 6, 2013 | Paul K. Logsdon

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Dr. Geoffrey W. Sutton, professor of psychology at Evangel University, published an article in the alumni issue of the Recorder, Alpha Chi’s scholarly journal, titled “Academic Pilgrimages.”

“Dr. Dennis Organ of Harding University, the editor of this issue of the Recorder, sent a request for articles on what faculty members learn from academic pilgrimages,” Sutton said. “He was interested in experiences that offered a new understanding.”

Sutton had traveled to Kenya with fellow psychologist Dr. Grant Jones, coordinator of psychology for Evangel. They visited a refugee camp as part of their plans for a student trip.

“We met people who had escaped a massacre,” Sutton said. “They lost friends and relatives. They suffered burns and lost their homes when their village was pillaged. It was an incredibly emotional experience.

“I hope people appreciate the depth of suffering people experience following trauma and that initial care often means meeting their basic needs rather than dealing with psychological aspects of trauma. This particular trip evoked strong feelings, so when I saw the request for an essay, it was easy to write the narrative.”
