Evangel University to host a CIVA traveling art exhibition

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. — Evangel University’s art program is pleased to host a traveling art exhibition by Christians in the Visual Arts, also known as CIVA. The exhibition is titled “Touch, Anoint, and Heal: God with Us,” and will include works of 30 artists from the United States and Europe.

The Barnett Art Gallery will host the show from Feb. 18 – Mar. 29. The exhibit is open to the public and admission is free. The gallery is open Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to noon.

The exhibition contains pieces in several types of media such as photography, painting, fibers, digital and mixed media.

The physical aspects of “touch, anoint and heal” are interpreted differently by many, but for an artist, these acts are intimate and emblematic. The purpose of this exhibition is for audiences to imbibe the artists’ creative touch in hopes of evoking a spiritual response.

Evangel connection

“What is so interesting about these types of shows is the extreme range of interpretation that various artists have in response to the show’s theme,” says Michael Buesking, professor of art at Evangel. “We get so used to thinking our own thoughts; it should be refreshing to let someone else’s thoughts try out our brains for a while.”

Buesking is one of the traveling exhibit’s featured artists. The exhibit includes his oil-on-canvas work, “Healing of the Blind Man,” which depicts a scene from the ninth chapter of the biblical book of John.

“This depicts my creative view of the interaction of Christ with the blind man. I was intrigued with Christ’s muddy fingers and what might have been the surprise — maybe even the confusion — of the blind man as this other Man smeared the sticky stuff on his eyes,” says Buesking of his piece.

Buesking has been an active member of CIVA for almost 20 years. Another of his pieces, “Work: Curse or Calling,” is currently showing in one of CIVA’s other traveling exhibitions.
