SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel University graduate student Lori Luthy gave a presentation at the Missouri Professors of Educational Administration spring conference. The conference was held in Columbia, Mo.
Luthy is earning a Master of Education in reading.
She presented research conducted as part of the Action Research course taught by Dr. Matt Stringer, associate professor of education. The project titled Examining the Effect of Reading Conferences and Independent Reading on Achievement of Third Graders examined the use of independent reading time and reading conferences in reading instruction.
“During the conferences, the teacher met with students one-on-one to discuss their current reading level and strategies to improve,” Stringer said. “Reading scores from the beginning of the treatment were compared to scores at the end of the treatment. A significant increase was noticed.”
Students also were surveyed to determine their views on independent reading. It was determined that students enjoy discussing books with their classmates, and they feel that reading conferences improve their ability to read.
“Evangel University appreciates the opportunity provided by MPEA. This is a time for our graduate students in education to showcase their hard work,” Stringer said. “Lori was well deserving of the opportunity and has a strong desire to contribute to the field of educational research.”
The MPEA works collaboratively with 17 Missouri universities to prepare educational administrators and others interested in the preparation of school and district administrators.
