SPRINGFIELD, Mo.—The Evangel University student newspaper, The Lance, recently was named as a finalist for the Online Pacemaker Award by the Associated Collegiate Press national contest. The winners will be announced at the fall 2013 ACP convention.
The Pacemaker Award is the highest honor awarded by the ACP, and it is now being given to online college student publications. Awards are based on design, ease of navigation, writing and editing, graphics and interactivity.
The Associated Collegiate Press is the oldest and largest national membership organization for college student journalists. More than 20,000 students are staffers at ACP member publications. Both The Lance and the Excalibur, Evangel’s yearbook, are ACP members.
Christine Temple, senior journalism major from Ozark, Mo., served as The Lance editor in chief.
Jonathan May, sophomore film major from Bigfork, Mont., and Jordan Sjostrom, senior digital arts major from Cherry Valley, Ill., served as the online editors.
“The Lance’s online content is implemented, maintained and promoted at the initiative of the student staff,” said Melinda Booze, assistant professor of communication and faculty adviser for the student newspaper.
“To be recognized with a Pacemaker nomination in this competitive category rewards the students’ goal to keep the digital content compelling. Jonathan May, especially, deserves kudos for building an engaging site.”
About the award
The Online Pacemaker competition replaces ACP’s Best of the Net competition, which began in 1995 as the first nationwide competition for online college student publications.
The online publication must be accessible via Internet Web browsers. The site must be produced and maintained primarily by students.
The contest recognizes excellent student media produced during 2012. Professional media members serve as contest judges.
