Evangel professor Huba Ray named Counselor Advocate of the Year

April 2, 2014 | Anna Lester

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Dr. Huba Ray, associate professor of school counseling at Evangel University, was named Missouri Counselor Advocate of the Year by the Missouri School Counselor Association.

Ray was selected for this recognition based on her support and promotion of guidance and counseling services, implementation of new counseling services and improvement of current counseling services. The award is open to individuals from the state of Missouri whose work impacts school counseling programs.

“To be selected as the Counselor Advocate of the Year is the highest honor in the school counseling profession,” said Debbie Bicket, assistant professor of guidance and counseling. “School counselors are integral to the emotional, academic and career success of students. Counselors are the only school professionals to provide proactive and preventative services to all students from pre-school to high school.”

As an educator of school counselors, Ray works to ensure that her students are fully prepared to provide counseling and resource services in diverse school settings.

“She has demonstrated an innovative approach to course offerings, and her students continually cite her ongoing support well beyond graduation,” Bicket said.

In May of 2013, she also received the Post-Secondary Counselor of the Year Award at the Southwest Missouri School Counselor’s Association spring conference.
