National Campus Safety Awareness Month

September 3, 2014 | Paul K. Logsdon

SPRINGFIELD, MO — Evangel University is participating in National Campus Safety Awareness Month. The non-profit Clery Center for Security On Campus is partnering with Evangel and other organizations and institutions for the Safe Campus, Strong Voices campaign.

Safe Campus, Strong Voices focuses campus communities on increasing awareness and engagement around issues such as sexual assault, dating violence, hazing, stalking. It empowers students as bystanders to make changes in their campus environment and encourages victims to seek the support they deserve.

“The first few weeks of college are critical,” said Amy Guthrie, program coordinator for the Clery Center. “National Campus Safety Awareness Month is an opportunity to start dialogue about campus safety early in the school year, a time when we typically see an increase in crime.”

Evangel University is committed to creating a safer and supportive campus for all campus community members.

“Our department’s #1 priority is to protect our most valuable asset, our people,” said Roger Moore, Evangel’s director of public safety.

“By participating in the Safe Campus, Strong Voices campaign, we hope to raise the level of awareness of our community members and to inform them of ways they can help keep themselves safe.”

Events create awareness

As a part of the National Campus Safety Awareness Month, Evangel University will host the following events:

• Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention (SHARP) training for female students on Sept. 13.

• Coffee with the Director on Sept. 17, in the heritage room, with Roger Moore, director of public safety

• Daily Facebook posts on the department of public safety Facebook page about a variety of topics including: bystander intervention, stalking awareness, emergency preparedness and fire safety.

Institutions participating in the National Campus Safety Awareness Month campaign receive resources that help them implement programming on their campuses.

Insight and information has been contributed by collaborators such as the Stalking Resource Center, ResponseAbility, Stop the Silence, Students Active for Ending Rape, HazingPrevention.org, Break the Cycle, and the National Partnership to End Interpersonal Violence Across the Lifespan.
