SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Evangel University theatre students will present George Bernard Shaw’s Tony-and-Academy-Award-winning Pygmalion on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 13-15 and 20-22.
The play will begin each evening at 7 p.m. and will take place in the Barnett Fine Arts Theater. Tickets are $10 per person, and group tickets (10 or more) are $7 per person. The student rate is also $7 per person.
Tickets may be purchased online or at the door.
The production is under the direction of Glenda Mohr, associate professor of theatre.
The cast and crew consist of Evangel students ranging from seniors to first-semester freshman. The students taking part come from a variety of academic departments, as participation in the production is open to all students.
Synopsis
In ancient Greek mythology, the artist Pygmalion falls in love with one of his sculptures, which, later, in answer to his prayer, comes to life. In George Bernard Shaw’s allusive 1912 play, professor of phonetics Henry Higgins attempts to create a duchess out of a common flower vendor, Eliza Doolittle, mainly by changing the way she speaks; Higgins believes that impeccable speech is the key to acquiring a high-class reputation. He is determined to succeed, so much so that he treats Eliza as an experimental creature rather than as a human being. Pygmalion satirizes the stiff, early-1900s British class system and its failure to understand women’s potentials for independence.
