September is National Campus Safety Awareness Month

SPRINGFIELD, MO — Evangel University is participating in National Campus Safety Awareness Month, during September 2016.

The non-profit Clery Center for Security On Campus is a national organization dedicated to providing training, advocacy and education for students, parents and administrators.

This year, the Clery Center is partnering with Evangel and other organizations and institutions for the “Moving Forward Together” campaign, with a focus on collaboration and communication.

The organization’s goal is to increase awareness and engagement around issues such as sexual assault, dating violence, hazing and stalking.

As a part of the month-long emphasis, Evangel’s Department of Public Safety will be presenting a SHARP class — Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention — for female students, faculty and staff, on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The training session will be held on the second floor of the Cantrell Student Union, in the Joust Conference room. It will be taught by Shawna Jones and Michelle Stewart, certified instructors and employees of Evangel’s Department of Public Safety.

“The first few weeks of college are critical to starting a dialog about campus safety,” said Todd Revell, Evangel’s director of public safety. “Providing a safe learning environment for the students and employees at EU is our department’s top priority.”

Prior to joining Evangel last summer, Revell served 25 years with the Springfield Police Department.

Evangel posts news and instructional messages on the Department of Public Safety Facebook page about a variety of topics including bystander intervention, stalking awareness and emergency preparedness.
