SPRINGFIELD, Mo. – Should a strong Christian be a capitalist?
That provocative question will be the starting point for a lecture at Evangel University titled “Money, Greed and God” on Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m., in Zimmerman Hall room 105.
Author Jay W. Richards will discuss his book by the same title, which looks at the capitalist system within the context of the Christian faith and examines how enterprise based on hard work, honesty and trust fosters creativity and growth.
Dr. Richards is an assistant research professor in the School of Business and Economics at The Catholic University of America in Washington D.C.
The lecture at Evangel University is sponsored by the Apologia Fellowship, Evangel’s student organization for philosophy, as well as the Institute for Humane Studies and the John Templeton Foundation.
“These two organizations are committed to providing students with opportunities to study, debate, research and promote the principles of a free society,” said Dr. Calvin Pincombe, professor of philosophy and apologetics.
Widely respected author, documentarian
Dr. Richards is the author of several books, including the New York Times bestsellers Infiltrated (2013) and Indivisible (2012). He is also co-author of The Privileged Planet with astronomer Guillermo Gonzalez.

Dr. Richards’ articles and essays have been published in The Harvard Business Review, Wall Street Journal, Barron’s, Washington Post, Forbes, The Daily Caller, Investor’s Business Daily, Washington Times, The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Huffington Post, The American Spectator, The Daily Caller, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer, and a wide variety of other publications.
His topics range from culture, economics and public policy, to natural science, technology and the environment.
Dr. Richards is also creator and executive producer of several documentaries, including three that appeared widely on PBS — The Call of the Entrepreneur, The Birth of Freedom, and The Privileged Planet.
He earned a Ph.D., with honors, in philosophy and theology from Princeton Theological Seminary. He also holds an M.Div. (Master of Divinity), a Th.M. (Master of Theology), and a B.A. with majors in Political Science and Religion.
