October 3, 2017 | Paul K. Logsdon

Nearly 90 former members of HeartSong return to Springfield this weekend

Evangel University’s touring ensemble HeartSong will perform a 25th Anniversary Reunion Concert this Friday, Oct. 6, at 8 p.m., as part of Evangel’s Homecoming 2017 Celebration.

Admission is free and the public is invited to attend. The concert will take place in the Robert H. Spence Chapel, at 1111 N. Glenstone Ave.

Nearly 90 former members of HeartSong are returning from across the USA to perform with, and enjoy the music of, the current group under the direction of its founder, Dr. Bonnie Jenkins.

HeartSong began on the campus of CBC and transitioned to Evangel in 2013. Their repertoire covers a variety of styles including contemporary worship, gospel and traditional.

HeartSong travels throughout the Midwest on weekends and does extended tours during spring and summer breaks at Evangel. They have been in every state in the U.S. with the exception of Alaska.

“We have also traveled overseas to such places as Barbados, Jamaica, Amsterdam and Brussels,” said Dr. Jenkins. “In 2014, we performed several concerts in Rome, Italy, including one at the Coliseum.”

A Message from Dr. Bonnie Jenkins, HeartSong Director

Doug and I want to say a special ‘thank you’ for coming tonight. This is a night of thanksgiving for God’s goodness and faithfulness down through the years. When we received the invitation in 1993 from Dr. and Mrs. Maurice Lednicky, president and first lady of Central Bible College, to start HeartSong, we could never have imagined and envisioned what God had instore. Year after year, God brought highly gifted musicians to the group with hearts for ministry and a passion for worship. We have been richly blessed!

In the beginning I recognized that this would be a ministry with great responsibility both musically and spiritually.  We dedicated this group to the Lord knowing that this ministry team was His. The scripture that would become our theme through the years is Psalm 57:7, “My heart is steadfast, O God, my heart is steadfast: I will sing and give praise.” It has been our prayer that these young people would be committed to Christ and would not let anything deter them from God’s plan.

HeartSong has ministered in nearly all fifty states including Hawaii. We’ve also traveled to Barbados, Jamaica, Italy, Belgium, and the Netherlands. There are so many stories to tell of the miracles that have happened at the altars. I wish I had time to recount them all but we’ve seen couples rededicate their lives to Christ and each other, we’ve seen the sick healed, addictions broken, and countless lives have found Christ. We are humbled by His faithfulness.

Tonight we reflect on how God has used and is using our HeartSong alumni around the world. We want to say a special thank you to all of the HeartSong members (my kids). Thank you for your dedication to God and to the calling He has on your lives. Only eternity will reveal the impact that you have had on the Kingdom. Also, we want to thank Pres. and Mrs. Maurice Lednicky and Pres. Carol Taylor. You have continued to support this ministry and have blessed the lives of these students. Tonight we can all say together, “To God be the glory, great things He has done!”
