Trevor Ruth (’07): Springfield Boys & Girls Club youth counselor

December 6, 2011

As a youth counselor at a local Boys & Girls Club in Springfield, Missouri, Trevor Ruth, a 2007 Evangel graduate, is implementing his training from his undergraduate work at Evangel University by organizing programs that promote learning and skill-building for at-risk youth. He has even started a Rugby Club as an incentive for these youth to become involved in a sport that is not offered in other community programs.

In addition to the regular programs at the Boys & Girls Club, Ruth has collaborated with Coach Dawn Neal of Evangel’s women’s basketball team and Coach Chad Gehring of Evangel’s football team to offer sports clinics, which provide Evangel athletes an opportunity to interact with and mentor these boys and girls. Ruth strives to be a positive male role model in the lives of these young people. “Most of the youth I work with are considered disadvantaged in some way, shape or form,” Ruth says. “I see myself as a support system in the midst of change and uncertainty.”

As a Recreation major and football player at Evangel, Ruth benefitted greatly from the relationships he built with professors. “A major benefit in attending a smaller university in comparison to a larger, state university is the one-on-one interaction you receive from professors,” Ruth says. “At Evangel, you get that personal interaction with your professors that allows for a deeper understanding of the subject matter.”

Besides this interaction with professors, Ruth also experienced a unique internship opportunity during his time at Evangel, which prepared him for his current position at Boys and Girls Club. “I was lucky enough to do an internship at a public park summer youth camp in my hometown,” Ruth says. “This was only possible thanks to the flexibility of my department’s professors who encouraged students to do what they wanted to do for their internships.”

Ruth says students who attend Evangel find a place to excel academically and grow socially. “Evangel is a positive place where you will meet many new people with many different opinions on a great deal of topics,” says Ruth. He encourages those who desire to learn and grow as a Christian while advancing their career goals to consider attending Evangel.
