Biological Chemistry
Bachelor of Science in Biological Chemistry
The Biological Chemistry major is an interdisciplinary, comprehensive program involving coursework in biology and chemistry, with an emphasis on research. This degree provides diverse employment opportunities as well as preparation for graduate and professional studies. The Biological Chemistry major is ideal for students looking toward careers in medicine or pharmacy. Professors are committed to helping students to pursue God’s call on their lives and their personal academic aspirations.
The Evangel University Department of Science and Technology is dedicated to the spiritual, academic and social growth of every student. The department’s purpose is to provide an excellent scientific education that is thoroughly integrated with the University’s emphasis on the development of strong Christian character. Within this framework, students must contend with new scientific, social, ethical and technological challenges. Students learn to communicate technical concepts clearly and effectively and exhibit analytical thinking and problem solving skills.
The Biological Chemistry major is designed to produce scientists who are capable of working independently as well as part of a team in both biology and chemistry. Biology courses are designed to promote students’ comprehension at various levels (environmental, organismal, cellular and molecular) and critical evaluation of scientific literature to foster skills in assessing scientific information. Chemistry courses are comprehensive in depth and scope. Students are provided with practical experiences through laboratory and field studies. Students are strongly encouraged to gain career-related experience prior to graduation in the form of work studies, internships or summer research opportunities. The Biological Chemistry major prepares students for careers in pharmacy, biomedical research, medicine, dentistry, optometry, and veterinary medicine.

| Cell Biology | Study of cellular organization and function with primary emphasis on the eukaryotic cell. |
| Molecular and Classical Genetics | Genetics topics that were covered broadly in general biology are studied in depth. Emphasis is placed on linking classical transmission genetics, molecular genetics, human genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics. |
| Physical Chemistry | Atomic theory, states of matter, elementary thermodynamics, molecular structure, solutions and their properties, and chemical equilibrium. |
| Organic Chemistry | General principles and theories of organic chemistry. Preparation, properties, mechanisms of reactions and uses of the aliphatic compounds, basic spectroscopy, introduction to aromatic compounds, coverage of functional groups pertinent to biologically important molecules (such as alcohols, carbonyls, carboxylic acids and derivatives, amines), and an introduction to biochemically important molecules. |
