“I traveled to Nairobi, Kenya with the psychology department under the leadership of Dr. Grant Jones. There, we visited two orphanages, MCDC (a school in the second largest slum in Africa) and Teen Challenge-Kenya. A majority of the people we worked with had experienced the great loss of a mother, father, sibling or caregiver. We provided trauma relief as counselors (which was amazing), but the real impact came in being there to listen and care for them.
Basset, Brice, Musa and Joe had my heart from the minute I said hello. These four little boys changed me in a way that is indescribable. Since the trip, I have stayed in touch with them, sending Valentine’s, sweets and birthday cards. I was able to show these precious boys that someone in the world loves them and that they have much more worth than they realize.
The trip taught me to appreciate all I have. It also taught me new appreciation for Evangel. Now, wrapping up my senior year as a psychology major, I can say I have had a lot of great experiences at Evangel, but I know this trip was the true purpose for why I felt drawn to this school way back in my junior year of high school.”
