Psychology student awarded summer research grant

When Kayla Jordan signed up for Evangel’s psychology internship last spring, she had no idea where that opportunity would lead her.
“As I started doing research, I discovered that it was fun, and I enjoyed doing it,” says Jordan, a senior psychology and history double major from Ripley, Tennesee.
This experience led her to apply for a summer research grant from Psi Chi, the international honor society for psychology.
Jordan was awarded a $5,000 grant in March. She is one of only 14 undergraduate Psi Chi members internationally to receive a summer research grant.
She earned the grant with her proposed research project “The Effects of Apology and Perspective-Taking on Intergroup Forgiveness and Attitudes.”
Jordan has two faculty sponsors, Dr. Geoffrey Sutton, psychology professor from Evangel, and Dr. Everett Worthington from Virginia Commonwealth University.
“Dr. Sutton knew Dr. Worthington, an internationally known psychological scientist, and put me in contact with him,” she says. After looking at her proposal, Worthington agreed to co-sponsor the project.
Jordan will spend this summer conducting her research at Virginia Commonwealth University, a nationally recognized research institution. She will study how intergroup forgiveness may be facilitated by apology and perspective-taking.
“I am so proud of her,” says Sutton. “She has already done some outstanding work, and I am excited to see her develop her skills to the next level by working with a well-known scientist.”
Jordan has already completed one research project on her own and one with another student. She is currently assisting Dr. Sutton with two other projects.
Jordan says, “Research is the foundation of psychology, and I want to help discover knowledge that could make our world better.
“The opportunities I have had at Evangel to conduct research and present at research conferences have really strengthened my calling.”
