Homecoming 2012 Recap
Homecoming 2012 kicked off on Thursday, October 11, with a Chapel service featuring guest speakers Ron and Monique (McDowell) Harris, both 1992 graduates who received the 2012 Alumni Association President’s Award. The service also featured an alumni-led praise and worship band. The Alumni Board of Director’s luncheon and meeting was also held on Thursday.
On Thursday afternoon, a dedication ceremony was held in Riggs Hall honoring Dr. Grant Wacker, one of the foremost historians of American religion, who donated his vast research collection on Pentecostal history to the Flower Pentecostal Heritage Center. Dr. Wacker is the grandson of the Rev. Ralph Riggs, for whom Riggs Hall is named. Riggs, a former general superintendent of the Assemblies of God, is credited with the foundation of Evangel University.
On Thursday evening, the EU’s Got Talent semifinals and the President’s Club Dinner rounded out the Homecoming festivities for the day.
From Friday morning’s Homecoming Chapel featuring President Spence to EU Facetime and the Silent Auction, it was a jam-packed day full of events for both students and alumni at Evangel. Many alumni were featured in classes throughout the day, giving students a chance to interact with alumni who are now experts in their fields. Athletic events also ruled the day with the alumni golf tournament, softball and soccer games.
Friday afternoon’s Trees of Honor ceremony recognized three former members of the Evangel staff and faculty who were honored for their exemplary and dedicated service to the University.
Class reunions, which are always a highlight, were also on Friday evening. One of the biggest events of the weekend was the EU’s Got Talent Finals, which has become an Evangel Homecoming favorite for both students and alumni. Check out all the Friday Homecoming photos and join us next year for the fun.
The final day of Homecoming 2012 started bright and early with the annual Pearson-Creek 5K Fun Run/Walk at the Crusader Track. This was followed by the Alumni Breakfast and annual Alumni Association Business Meeting.
The morning also held a variety of networking events before the big tailgate party and football game. The halftime show featured the Crusader Marching Band, the coronation of the king and queen, and the induction of the 1966 undefeated track team into the Athletics Hall of Fame.
The culminating event of the weekend was the Homecoming Celebration Banquet on Saturday evening. This event featured the alumni award presentations as well as a keynote address by Dr. George O. Wood (’62), general superintendent of the Assemblies of God.
