Listen to the call

October 12th, 2012 | Christina Jeter

Evangel’s student body president, Javier Rodriguez, spoke in Chapel on Tuesday. Chapel speakers come from various walks of life, many from older walks, and they speak about what to expect in the journey ahead. When a fellow student speaks in Chapel, however, it’s like hearing from a soldier in the trenches with you rather than the captain back at base. The message is instantly relatable.

Javier talked about his life both before and after Evangel. He spoke about God’s call on our lives, and used Samuel’s life as an example. Javier’s message stuck with me this week — one idea specifically.

God’s call is often ambiguous to us, but not to Him. We may feel like we’re headed in an unclear direction or feel confused and disoriented, but God is always leading us steadily forward. When Samuel was anointing the next King of Israel, he probably had a far different mental picture than the scrawny boy God chose. Javier came to Evangel with the mental image of himself in the film industry. As he continued at Evangel, God eventually revealed a more political path for Javier’s life. We may picture a far different future for ourselves than God does, but the important thing is to stay sensitive to God’s call. We may not understand why He calls us where He does, but we still need to listen and obey. Javier followed the call, and many doors have opened as a result of his obedience.

When I chose Evangel, I wasn’t planning on double majoring. God called me into the Theatre department during my sophomore year through a scholarship. I still don’t know why I’m a double major, but God does. Honestly, God’s opinion is the only one which matters.

Deciding which college to go to is a huge decision which will impact the next stage of your life. When filling out applications and writing essays, you may not understand why God leads you where He does. The important thing is to follow His call. Samuel did, and he ended up having an enormous impact on Israel. Evangel may be among your list of colleges, and if God leads you here, don’t fret or worry. Answer the call. God has a plan for your life, and it’s going rock your world!
