Make a Difference Day
October 29th, 2012 | Hope Hamilton
There’s something about being a small part of a big good that makes me excited.
So naturally I looked forward to the “big good” of the year: National Make a Difference day. Last Saturday (October 27) was the 22nd annual Make a Difference Day, which which involved about 3 million people nationwide. Of course that included Evangel University.
Various clubs, ministries and academic groups on campus sponsored and set up many groups of student volunteers who went out into Springfield and helped people in need.
Agencies assisted by Evangel students and employees included the Center for the Blind, Habitat for Humanity, Humane Society of the Ozarks, Ozarks Family Resource Center (Boys and Girls Town), Ronald McDonald House, Sammy’s Window, Victory Mission, Watershed Committee of the Ozarks, plus two groups raking leaves and doing yard work in neighborhoods.
There were “Make a Difference” T-shirts given out to volunteers, and participants were included in four cash prize drawings. The rewards of service however, were much greater.
I joined a group of students who went to the Inner City Outreach, and it was great to see 14 students who had never visited ICO fall in love with the volunteers and the needy, and reach out to help others.
I was given the opportunity to work in the children’s section of ICO, which involved feeding the kids a hot meal, doing a time of worship and dance, sharing a Bible story and making a craft. The children who come to the outreach are all underprivileged, and some are without a home. No price tag could be put on the opportunity to just love on those kids and learn from the servitude of the other volunteers. I am so grateful to have had the chance.
On the way back to campus we passed groups of Evangel students along the sides of the road picking up trash and raking up leaves. The impact that students made throughout Springfield this weekend cannot be measured well, but I know we did make a difference. My prayer is that the difference does not end here, but that the connections students made would be life changing and that each seed planted would come into fruition.
