The top 5 places to (not) study on campus

February 15th, 2013 | Ian Richardson

Evangel is a great place to learn, but you can’t learn all the time. Every once and awhile it’s necessary to close those textbooks and relax.

While there are many places to have fun around Springfield, sometimes you may not feel like going out, or you may not have a car or the money at the moment.

When times like these come, all is not lost. There are plenty of places on campus where you can kick back – for free. Here are what I consider the top 5:

5. The cafeteria:

Everyone takes a study break to eat, right? Evangel’s cafeteria is the place to share a meal with your friends. The Evangel cafeteria has a variety of good food. Be on the lookout for themed nights for opportunities to try something extra special.

4. The library:

I know what you’re thinking, but, it just so happens the EU library is a lot more than just shelves of dictionaries, academic journals and Shakespeare (although I think kicking back with some Shakespeare is a perfectly relaxing way to spend an evening). The library has a wide selection of current magazines, as well as comfy chairs to read them in. But the real reason this is on the list: the huge selection of DVDs available for checkout. Can you say “free movie night?”

3. The Mabee Center:

If you’re breaking from homework but still have some energy to burn, check out the Mabee Student Fitness Center. Hang out and play basketball with your buddies, lift some weights or take the treadmill for a spin. It’s a great place to beat the stress.

2. The Joust:

Just about everyone comes to hang out at the Joust. Play some Ping-Pong or board games, watch a movie on the big-screen TV or take the Wii for a spin. Hungry? The Joust offers a variety of food and drink items that you can purchase using your meal plan.

1. The quad:

Stretch out on a blanket in the freshly-mowed grass and gaze up at the clouds (and the clock tower), read a book or play a pick-up game of Frisbee with your friends. Any afternoon when the sun’s shining brightly, this is the place to be.

There you have it. I could mention more – I didn’t even get the chance to name any of the fun events – but wait, you’re going to have to study sometime, aren’t you?
