417 Hall: A community of commuters

January 21st, 2014 | Christina Jeter

If you walk on Evangel’s campus, you won’t find dorm called 417 Hall . So what is it? Good question. I’m glad you asked. The residents of 417 Hall live all across Springfield and commute to Evangel and by the numbers, we’re the largest “hall” on campus. “How sad,” you might say. “Don’t these students miss out on things like floor events?” Absolutely not! In fact, commuters have access to the same opportunities provided to other students. As a fifth-year senior, I’ve lived both on and off campus. Here are six things you’ll love as a member of 417 Hall:

1. Devos

Wednesday morning devos provide the opportunity for commuters to enjoy fellowship, eat donuts and grab chapel credit!

2. Intramural sports

Commuter students participate in all the same intramural sports as other students. An email is sent out to commuters, giving them the opportunity to sign up. A member of the commuter council organizes the teams and provides information to the participants.

3. Commuter events

Not only do commuters have access to Evangel community events, but also to around ten to fifteen events planned specifically for commuter students. These events include but are not limited to Christmas Bake Day, paintball, ice skating, and Cardinals baseball games.

4. Choose your own Chapel seat

Instead of your RA picking your chapel seat for you, commuters are allowed to pick their own seat which is kind of, sort of awesome.

5. Commuter lunches

At least one commuter lunch takes place per semester, allowing commuter students the opportunity to eat free food, win door prizes, and experience fellowship. Free food and coffee are also offered at various times and places throughout the semester. Free stuff is always cool!

6. Commuter lounge

The commuter lounge provides a place for commuter students to hang out between classes. Inside the lounge is a television, microwave, fridge and comfortable chairs.

There you have it. 417 Hall: A hall unlike any other!
