Debate

Evangel features a parliamentary-style debate team that travels to tournaments and competitions alongside the Speech (Forensics) team, which has competed nationally and globally.

Dr. Joy Qualls, assistant professor of communication, serves as adviser of the debate team. Dr. Mark Kelton, associate professor of communication, advises the speech team.

Students interested in participating should register for Intercollegiate Forensics, a one-credit workshop class. Practice for debate competitions includes researching current events, reading academic literature, writing research summaries and engaging in mock debates.

The Communication Department offers both debate and speech scholarships. The department will release information on how to apply when the  new process is approved and put in place sometime during the 2013-14 academic year.

All universities compete in speech and debate at the same level, regardless of size. This means Evangel has the opportunity to match up with not only other Christian universities, but also with large universities and Ivy-League colleges.

Contact the Communication Department for more information about debate.
